CCC vs Maclehose - 10th July 2010

Posted by: webmaster on 26-Aug-2010   (44 Reads)
The 'Clubhouse'
In response to a request from Julia Howes we were delighted to stage a match against the Maclehose eleven. Having been deceived into thinking that this was a senior team with an average age of 70, CCC was forced to re-assess the opposition, since not only were there strong, strapping youths in their line-up, the Maclehose team had brought hordes of supporters.

We arrived at the ground to find that the clan had set up a very impressive grandstand with full VIP catering for what seemed to be hundreds of spectators drawn from all parts of the UK and the Oise. Our immediate hope is that the picnic and wine would dull the Scottish attack as we went into bat having won the toss.

Maclehose L opened the bowling and kept Pretsell and Nick Clarke at bay with some good medium pacers. Berguis beguiled them from the other end until Clarke set about him with a couple of well-struck boundaries before popping up a caught and bowled to Maclehose L – First blood to the visitors with the score on 23.    read more ...

Ferry firm drops Boulogne route

Posted by: webmaster on 24-Aug-2010   (23 Reads)
LD Lines close Boulogne Route
FERRY company LD Lines is ending its Dover-Boulogne passenger service after failing to get the traffic expected when it launched the route less than two years ago.

Its ferries Norman Bridge and Norman Trader will run a freight and passenger service until September 5 - the end of the school holidays - and passengers booked up until this date will be unaffected by the change.

Passengers on later ferries will be offered alternatives, including the company's other routes, and compensated with travel offers for future crossings.

Its other services are between Ramsgate-Ostende, Newhaven-Dieppe, Porstmouth-Le Havre.

Managing director Christophe Santoni said there was "huge over capacity on the Dover Strait" but they would examine every option to maintain some ferry service to Boulogne, even if only a reduced-frequency, unaccompanied freight service.

Further along the Channel at Cherbourg, ferry operators and the port are arguing over the long-term future of crossings as the port wants to close its most modern loading ramp. They are due to meet this week.

Well Done to our Super Smart Students!

APARC 2010 Exam Results
Once again our students have excelled in their end of year exams. This year we have two sets of results to boast about! Firstly, our OIB (Option International Baccalaureate) students all passed their BACs with flying colours – special praise to Manon Lewis and Damien Jacobee who both attained a “mention tres bien”. All the students got the necessary grades to pursue their studies at the universities of their choice.

Secondly, all our IGCSE students gained excellent results in both First Language English and English Literature. Kenzie Jones, Lucy Findlay and Vinca Montmeat all achieved double A* grades – the highest level possible. In total, eleven out of the seventeen Language students attained an A grade, seven of those being A*! Six of our nine Literature students got an A grade with the remaining three receiving a B grade.

It only remains for me to thank students, parents and teachers for all their hard work and effort over the course of the two years – APARC always has been and always will be about teamwork as these results prove!

Speed Camera Changes

Posted by: webmaster on 29-Jul-2010   (41 Reads)
At present in France the law states that before every speed camera there will be a warning sign, at a maximum of 400m before the camera. This makes it fairly easy to avoid being caught, as you are effectively being warned to slow down just in time. However, the law has now changed and the maximum distance for the warning sign is now 2km, bringing France into line with similar signs in the UK.

THE first batch of new signs will go up in August in the Dordogne and the Haut Rhin. The new signs, which carry the words ”pour votre sécurité, contrôles radars fréquents”, mark a zone where several cameras, both fixed and mobile, may be operating.

“These new panels are to stop drivers who are breaking the limit suddenly braking in front of the signs. They should make motorists drive responsibly at all times,” said Environment Minister Jean-Louis Borloo.

The first signs will be placed on the RD 936 at Lamonzie-Saint-Martin in the Dordogne, on the A36 at Sausheim in the Haut-Rhin and the RD 83 at Rouffach in the Haut-Rhin.

France now has 1,689 fixed cameras and 933 mobile ones, plus 234 cameras for catching drivers jumping red lights and 39 on level crossings.

Thoiry vs CCC - 27th June 2010

Posted by: webmaster on 10-Jul-2010   (98 Reads)
The CCC Black Eye Club
The 27th June saw CCC trek down to Thoiry with a some noticeable absences from the usual side. We turned up nevertheless with 11 players and an umpire in good spirits, against the only side we have beaten this year.

Thoiry won the toss and decided to bat - Chantilly to field in the airless cauldron of the Thoiry ground for 40 overs. Jones took the wicky pads as Homer was needed for bowling duties.

Thoiry started strongly with openers Greaves and Hardy; CCC having to wait for the score to reach 105 before Greaves fell for 81 to a Jean-François Ripoche catch. Things didn't really improve with the arrival of Curtis who also went on to get a 50. Opening bowlers made way for the first change, but the Thoiry score continued to amass.    read more ...

CCC vs Royal Bruxelles - 13th June 2010

Posted by: webmaster on 17-Jun-2010   (130 Reads)
The Teams
13th June saw a full strength Royal Bruxelles team arrive at Apremont for the second match of their tour, having played and beaten Thoiry the day before. I say full strength but that can really only refer to their actual presence - the combination of a winning start to their campaign and the physiological horrors of having to watch England's opening world cup match meant that they seemed a little worse for wear - there seemed to be some bug prevalent amongst the players that made them feel a little nauseous with a thumping headache and a dislike of loud noises. This was met with a great deal of sympathy from the Chantilly players who ensured that they didn’t miss any of the calls on the field by shouting them very loudly at every opportunity.

The weather had improved dramatically over the weekend and Nick and Amit were able to open the batting under glorious conditions. For some reason Nick was still heard to complain an awful lot; perhaps it was the sunshine that left him in need of water every couple of overs? Nick ‘Fanny Craddock’ Shepherd (*see below) and Patch opened the bowling with a very tidy spell – Shepherd taking Amit’s wicket in his first over and the pair restricting the openers to less than 5 an over. Much to his disgust Nick was unable to find the boundary having to run a great deal of twos and threes, which for some reason had an adverse affect on his health – the bug really seemed to be keeping him under the weather.    read more ...

Et alors! How French cricketers aim to beat us at our game own

Posted by: webmaster on 09-Jun-2010   (118 Reads)
From The Times - June 5 2010

For centuries it was dismissed by the French as an incomprehensible activity practised by British eccentrics and the inhabitants of other nations that had had the misfortune — or the poor judgment — to fall under British influence.

Now France has decided to take us on at our own game, aiming for nothing less than humiliation for les Anglais at Lord’s — albeit within a few decades.

The rise of cricket has been marked by its introduction to primary schools where pupils are getting to grips with le coup d’équerre (the square cut), la balle courbée vers l’extérieur (the outswinger) and a triumphant cry of et alors (howzat).

A state cricket diploma is expected to receive official approval this year in a step towards France’s first professional cricket coaches. “We have several buds which we are nurturing,” Tony Banton, the chairman of France Cricket, the national cricket association, said.    read more ...
