Importing a car
Importing a car
Posted: Fri Mar 12, 2010 4:05 am
Is anyone had brought a car from the USA to France ?
I'm going to leave the US & wonder if I should bring a new car with me to France knowing there willl be some modifications to make to the car in order to be at EU norms.
I'm thinking of Audi Q5, Benz ML 350, BMW X5 or X3 or Jeep Cherokee.
Do you know if it's not too difficult to get approve and which car is worth it.
Thank you for your input !

Hi Valerie,
I imported a car from Germany and I would guess the principles would be the same. The main concern would be the cost - you would have to pay an import duty for a car from outside the EU of about 30%, on top of the cost of the transport. That may well make the whole thing not worth it. You'd also have to get a certificate of conformance as the regulations would be different for a US car to a French one - stuff like lights, emissions etc. There is also a lot of paperwork to be done which is onerous although fairly simple to achieve.
I detailed the way I did it here, and there is an another article here which has a bit more detail.
Let us know how you get on!
