Auberge de Gicourt

The Auberge de Gicourt is located near Clermont, between Creil and Beauvais. It is a traditional French auberge, very busy on the saturday we visited which is a good sign! It is very nicely appointed, just off the main road with a nice atmosphere. It offers a 'cuisine gastronomique variée et préparée avec soin et créativité pour la joie du palais et des yeux' and it certainly didn't disappoint in the looks department. The first course arrived, beautifully presented with a Cocotte de Saint-Jacques et Gambas presented in a little Le Crueset type pot, and the Foie Gras and Crumble d'Escargots equally well served. The smells were certainly ticking the right boxes and it seemed from most reactions that the tastes were pretty good too.

Main course arrived fairly soon after and was equally well presented. The Selle d’Agneau Farcie Saveur Truffes was good, if the stuffing did taste a little manufactured and the Civet de Biche was very strongly flavoured - fantastic if you like strong flavours but perhaps a little overpowering if not. The only real disappointment of the evening were the Filets de Bar. It gave the impression of having been plated a good while before it was served and then having been re-heated. This could well be down to the difficulties of serving 20+ meals all at once. It does also seem to follow the pattern that restaurants around the Oise are not good at serving fish!

Desserts were pretty spectacular, a real feast for the eyes. All three choices were very good I thought (although I only got to sample two of them!) The restaurant obviously makes a big play of its presentation and it didn't let itself down with the final course.

So final thoughts on the restaurant? For 40€ a head I thought they did a very good job. They offer menus on a regular night from 21€ up to 55€ so to get what we did for that price, including the welcome drink, wine and coffee was a good offer. It was also very nice to be in our own room so we could make as much noise as we liked, and we were well looked after despite not letting them go home until midnight. Would I go back? Definitely. Whilst it is a little off the beaten track it is still only 30 minutes or so from Chantilly and I think a bit of a gem. You can rest assured that you will get good looking food, with fresh ingredients from a chef who obviously enjoys what he does.

Final Scores
Food: 8/10
Ambience: 9/10
Service: 8/10
Overall, a very good 9/10
