15 000 Euros

Posted by: Denzil on Wednesday July 31, 2013 (10:14:12)
A grey start from the Chateau de Chantilly at the start of an epic challenge
The figure says it all. Our project has come to an end, and we are delighted to announce that we have raised 15 000€ for our two charities. The event itself was absolutely incredible. Very tiring, but very enjoyable. A real team effort, with drivers and riders playing an equally important role.

A big thanks to those people who turned out to send us on our way on the 29th June - it gave us a huge boost to be applauded by such a good gathering.

There are so many anecdotes, so many moments to talk about, but this is not easy to do in an article. In the gallery you will find a small selection of the many photos we have of the event. These photos capture the essence of the event and are well worth a look.

This project closes with this article, but we thank all those who have contributed financially. We are immensely proud of our achievement, and we know that Fondation ARC and GAP are also delighted with our efforts.

As organiser of the event, and editor of this website, I would like to thank those people who assisted in the logistics and helped make it happen.

But most importantly I would like to take my hat off to my fellow team members who helped me complete a project that at times seemed too insane to be possible. To you, my friends, I say "Thank you and well done" - this is a chapter in our lives that we can look back at with pride and satisfaction.

Three days to go - last preparations under way..

Posted by: Denzil on Tuesday June 25, 2013 (19:39:40)
So the final preparations are on the way. Frantic looking at the weather forecast, which changes every day. The wind direction looks positive for us - that will be a relief - but it looks like we may be a little damp! Nick Jones did a mechanical check this evening, Max Shepherd is offering last-minute massage, food is being produced by the kilo-load, and the riders are desperately seeking supplies of Ibuprofen and chamois butter (don't get them mixed up folks!!). Any support for us at our departure from the Chateau de Chantilly (08.30 on Saturday 29th) is more than welcome. And the really good news... you'll find that on the fundraising page. So it really is now Destination Annecy...and watch this page for the outcome of our efforts. The editor wishes at this point to say how proud he is of the team, and how he is looking forward to the celebrations at Annecy. Very Happy

Objective Number One achieved

Posted by: Denzil on Sunday June 16, 2013 (13:14:23)
Very Happy A huge smile to announce that our first objective has been achieved. We have now received additional donations which allow us to ensure that we can distribute a minimum of 10 000 Euros to our two beneficiaires, Fondation ARC and GAP. But don't be surprised to find the thermometer on the fundraising page changed. There are still 2 weeks to go before we set up on our venture, and we need to be aiming higher.

It's now becoming crunch time : we've received our shirts (we'll be sending photos to our sponsors), we have our final team briefing, and the final logistical details will be resolved.

Now all we need to do is keep our training up and hope for a wind to blow in the right direction...

There's still time to give....

Presentation at Volkswagen Group France

Posted by: Denzil on Saturday May 25, 2013 (10:24:21)
One of our aims in this project is not only to raise money for our designated associations, but to give visibiity to Aphasia, which is an illness very poorly known. Volkswagen Group France kindly allowed Denzil Homer to present the project, and he was accompanied by Janny and Aalin Morelle (and Ussel of course, who was wonderfully behaved and was also a centre of attention!), and Nick Clarke. The staff of VGF showed a great deal of interest, and there were several spontanteous donations, with pledges to come. This has helped us to arrive at 3/4 of our objective. All efforts to increase awareness of Aphasia, and to support our project, will be gratefully received..    more ...

Some brave souls took on the wind..

Posted by: Denzil on Friday May 10, 2013 (16:45:09)
Well done to those few brave souls who rode against the wind, uphill this morning. Annare tried to see if she could make a full ride without puncturing - her speciality. We're getting a lot better at changing inner tubes though! And Nick Jones is always on hand to do brake adjustments also...    more ...

And the money keeps coming in...

Posted by: Denzil on Friday May 10, 2013 (14:40:16)
Thanks to our growing list of sponsors, both businesses and individuals, we have now reached a minimum of 6300€ for our 2 charitable associations. But there is plenty more going on. And while the money is hotting up, so is the training. Over the past few days, most of the team has taken advantage of the Bank Holidays to get out on their bikes. Several of us cycled both Wednesday and Thursday, to simulate getting back on bikes when we didn't really want to. Yes, the body protested for the first few kilometers, but we felt surprisingly good at the end. Now if we can only arrange for the wind to be behind us...Watch this site over the next few days, we might even have a few pictures to share with you.

Who are we?

Posted by: Denzil on Wednesday May 01, 2013 (13:34:35)

The thermometer's rising, thanks to our sponsors..

Posted by: Denzil on Wednesday May 01, 2013 (13:09:36)
22 sponsors - an impressive result
Fooled by the title? You're looking outside and asking yourself "where is the guy writing this - certainly not here"? Well for the moment we're not concerned by the outside thermometer, only the one measuring our donations. Sorry folks, due to technical issues we haven't got the thermometer on the site working, Crying or Very sad but I can tell you that we have now raised at least 6000€ once we've taken our costs out Very Happy On the picture you will find all of our very generous sponsors, and we're not finished yet. There are some who have definitely donated, but from whom we need their logos, and there are others from whom we anticipate donations within the next few days. Once we get them, we'll be sure to update the chart. Keep the money rolling in : everything we receive from now will go directly to our 2 charitable associations, GAP and FondationARC.

Sunshine at last!

Posted by: Denzil on Thursday April 25, 2013 (19:15:39)
Very Happy Yes, at last we have had some sunshine (ok, let's not get carried away, it's going to last only until tomorrow), and a small group of us took advantage with a very pleasant ride through the Ermenonville forest and via Montgrésin. Some of us (notably the editor) should have put suntan lotion on - the biker's tan is very evident, and not really "pretty in pink"! Here's a photo of us - note that Nick Clarke is praising the Lord for this beautiful day, and his son Patrick is wondering whether it wouldn't have been better to face the right way on the bike...

A Quiz for Geeks

Posted by: Denzil on Sunday March 17, 2013 (16:02:37)
One of our intrepid cyclists has been so taken by this event that he is considering getting an anorak!! He (Nick Jones, of course) has come up with a set of intriguing questions, the answer to which may come as somewhat of a surprise. Look at the following questions, and see what you think the answer is. I will post the answers in the next couple of weeks...

1) Which four mountains surround the town of Annecy?
2) Cycling at 30kph how much of the effort is being used to overcome air resistance? 30% , 65% or 90%?
3) Between Chantilly and Annecy how far do you expect to climb? More than 2000 meters, more than 3000 meters or more than 5000 meters?
4) Which is greater, the climb to Annecy or the climb from sea level to the top of Everest?
5) Is the height of Everest increasing or decreasing?
6) How much power is needed for an average person to cycle at 30kph on a flat road? 100W, 200W, 300W?
7) How many calories do you burn riding for an hour at that speed?
Cool Annecy is twinned to which UK town? (Please note that the smiley face is not deliberate - apparently the number 8 makes the computer smile!!)
9) Which is nearer, Cheltenham or Annecy?
10) How much more effort do you need to make cycling on the hoods versus on the drops? 2%, 10% or 25%?
11) Who is the stronger cyclist, Sir Chris Hoy or Mark Cavendish?
12) How many calories does a typical TdF winner like Alberto Contador burn climbing Alpe d’Huez. 100, 1000, 1500 ?
13) What is Herbularium du Morvan, a setting from Lord of the Rings, a mediaeval place for growing pot or botanical garden in the Morvan region of France?
14) How much harder do you need to pedal at 30kph in a fleece than in lycra? 1%, 2% or 12%?
